The email header is the first thing you need to determine the origin of the email (although it should be noted that headers can be forged).
That will generally give you the senders IP address (which unless its a major corporation will likely be an ISP). From there you can check the IP address using a tool like Domain Dossierhttp://centralops.net/co/DomainDossier.aspx
You can approach the ISP and ask who was assigned that IP address at the time and date in the email header (if you're lucky it will be a static IP address instead of a dynamic IP address).
you can also check to geo location of the IP address using tools like http://www.geoiptool.com/but this is usually not that accurate and different tools will often give you different results.
