Trial of prisoner through skype

The Bombay High Court while hearing a PIL suggested to the state to set up special cells attached to the prisons and those cells would function exclusively for escorting under trials to prison.
In the wake of low police escort personnel available in the department, which eventually leads to the delay in criminal trials, the Maharashtra Prison department will be soon seen using Skype to produce under trials before court.
To begin with the usage of advanced technology, a trial project recently got over at the Arthur road and Taloja prison linking both the Central prisons via Skype.
Apartment from the high telephone bills, the prison department over the years is been trying to become tech savvy and use the service of internet. State home department official said "The Skype service is cost effective and we already have had a discussion with the National Informatics Centre to work out way to ensure that there is no third party intrusion in the Skype service being used by the department."
"Apart from the cost effectiveness, in several parts of the state there is a problem of load shedding and the use of Skype which is an internet based program is an alternative option to tackle and I am in complete support of using of this application," said Arthur road Jail Superintendent, V D Borkule.
In the last three month, approx 54 prisons and 146 courts have been linked via skype and over 10,000 trials have been conducted since the beginning of this year. The telephone bill of the video conferencing is approx Rs. 15,000 per month.
