To underline the point that despite having several laws in place how people in our society still commiserate the birth of a girl child, Chief Justice of Punjab and Haryana High Court Sanjay Kishan Kaul on Saturday shared one such experience.
Speaking at a first of its kind National Conference on Women Rights, the Chief Justice said that when his second daughter was born, the doctor was 'quite apologetic' without 'realising our joy'. The doctor even asked the Chief Justice to remain hopeful for the third time.
Assuring the doctor that he was was very happy, Justice Kaul said it is this mindset which has to change.
"Despite six-and-a-half decades of Independence, women rights are still an illusion in our society.
'There is no easy solution to gender-based discrimination as it is a deep rooted social malice," he added. "It is easier to change laws than to change mindsets," he said.
Justice Kaul further observed that mere enactment of laws is useless until it gives teeth. "What is ironical is that women themselves become part of crime against women," he added.
Expressing his pain over the compromise made with a girl child at every step, Justice Kaul said, "We should learn to treat our daughters the way we treat our sons."
Meanwhile, Haryana Chief Minister Bhupinder Singh Hooda appealed to the judiciary to give more landmark judgments. It is much easier to change laws then to change people's mindset. He requested the judiciary to fast track cases against women.
Justice Jasbir Singh, first puisne Judge of Punjab and Haryana High Court said, "We need to respect our daughters just like we respect and love our sons." Justice Surya Kant later gave a vote of thanks.1
