What is the meaning of "rooting" in mobile phone devices?

Rooting" , as the word points is going down and getting to the roots, the base of something. In mobile phones the purchaser and holder is just a user generally. He gets some default menus and will use. There may be some flexibility, which also will be menu driven by which the user can add, delete or modify certain use features.

But a person who has the technical knowledge may want to adapt his mobile phone or customise its functions the way he wants. For this he has to get access to the "roots" or the basic systems. By 'rooting' one is able to add, delete, modify the different features there. The person who knows and does rooting can thus remove certain restrictions already put as default. He can remove certain features and add certain others.

In short by 'rooting' a user becomes a controller also by accessing the control systems.

People like to do 'rooting' when they like to add more features possible in the system, or want to adapt and customise certain facilities or features, add or run new apps- but such access not given to user to do so.

Just like tampering with the roots of a plant or tree can sometimes damage the tree or plant, 'rooting' can also damage the phone. In case of damages or malfunction, even the warranty will not stand as it amounts to tampering.

Hence 'rooting' is a delicate matte and has its own risk also. It should not be done based on some half knowledge.1

Rooting provides access for deletion, controlling or modifying all the user installed applications
