App of the Week: BoxCryptor – A Layer of Security For Files in The Cloud

Whether we like it or not, much of our lives are stored in and accessed via the cloud: email, social networks, photos, videos, documents, bills…the list is all encompassing. Most of us accept it and many embrace it to enhance productivity in an increasingly mobile world. But all of us want to know that our data is secure.
All major cloud storage providers – Dropbox, Google Drive, Microsoft SkyDrive, SugarSync, Box and others – have robust security measures in place but it never hurts to have another layer of protection. BoxCryptor, an encryption software optimized for cloud storage, does exactly that, encrypting files stored in most of the major cloud providers.

Here’s how it works: Boxcryptor creates a virtual drive on your computer that allows you to encrypt files locally before uploading them to Dropbox or other cloud storage services. Simply drop a file into the Boxcryptor drive and it will get automatically encrypted before it is synced to the cloud.
