Metadata is descriptive information about computer files

Metadata. Sometimes described as data about other data, this term refers to

descriptive information about computer files. Metadata might describe how, when, and

by whom a particular file was received, created, accessed, and/or modified; how the file

is formatted; and the type of content in the file . Some

metadata, such as file dates and sizes, can easily be seen by the user of the computer,

while other metadata is embedded in file locations requiring special software tools or user

knowledge to be revealed. Metadata information is generally not reproduced in full form

when a document is printed
